The rule, and Black Friday to 2031
US federal law sets Thanksgiving as “the fourth Thursday in November”. Black Friday is the next day and Cyber Monday the Monday after, so Black Friday always falls between 23 and 29 November: earliest when 1 November is a Thursday, latest when it is a Friday.

Using the dates without being rushed
Sales now start well before Black Friday and run on after Cyber Monday, so the day itself matters less than the price. When Which? compared 175 products on offer on Black Friday 2024 at eight UK retailers, every one was the same price or cheaper at some point in the six months before or after the sale, and none was at its lowest price of the year on the day.
- Start a price log now. Add what you want to the price watchlist and note the price every few days.
- On the day, check the saving against your log with the real-deal checker, not against the “was” price.
- Mind the posting dates. If a gift has to arrive by Christmas, the shipping deadlines start in early December.
